Steering Towards Sustainable Mobility: A Holistic Examination of Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program Impact on Commuting Public and Private School Students in the University Belt, Manila, Philippines

The Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program aims to create convenient, accessible, and eco-friendly electric jeepneys, commonly called “Jeepney Modernization,” for commuters in urban areas. However, the price of modernized jeepneys is costly, leaving a majority of commuters, especially students, with the burden of making enough profit to fund the program, resulting in fare increases continually. Hence, this research study aims to assess the following categories: (1) students’ perceptions of the significance of jeepneys for student commutes, (2) students’ perception of Jeepney Modernization policies and possible fare increase, and (3) students’ perceptions on their affordability of the fare increase. The researchers utilized a quantitative approach using modified survey questions adapted from existing studies. This survey was distributed to (40) college students. Specifically, (10) participants from each of the following four universities: Pamantasan Ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) and Unibersidad de Manila (UDM), public schools; Far Eastern University (FEU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST), private schools. Results have shown no significant differences in students’ perspectives from public and private universities within U-Belt. This indicates that regardless of variation in academic institutions, students have similar perspectives on the significance of Jeepney usage, Jeepney modernization program policies, Fares increase, and Fares affordability. Ultimately, this research provided valuable insights regarding students’ challenges and experiences due to the recent transportation changes and could potentially aid policymakers in mitigating negative impacts.

Envisioning the Future: A Quantitative Analysis of Architecture Students’ Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence Integration in Architectural Design across Region III, IV-A, and NCR, Philippines

In an era characterized by modernization and technological advancements, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought changes to the different processes of various industries, including the field of architecture. To address concerns and present the views of those in the industry, this research aims to identify and describe the perceptions of Architecture students from various universities/colleges towards adopting AI in Architectural Design through descriptive-correlational research. As well as to discover the students’ acceptance level in adopting artificial intelligence in academic curriculum. Forty-five (45) university/college students enrolled in an Architecture program across diverse institutions drawn from a purposive sampling method answered a survey questionnaire containing Twenty (20) questions answerable by a 5-point Likert Scale. The results revealed that the students’ perceptions were neutral regarding adopting artificial intelligence in academic curriculum and future employment and careers. The correlational analysis suggested that the relationship between the perception of AI in architecture and its impact on career and employment was weak as they saw the potential threat of AI in future employment opportunities. The researchers recommended the results of this study for future research when gathering data related to artificial intelligence, the perception of the students, and the development of AI on how to improve and recognize the limitations of its use.

From Routes to Resilience: Exploring Manila Jeepney Drivers’ Demographics and Perspectives on Proposed Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) through Thematic Analysis

The Department of Transportation (DoTr) introduced the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) through Department Order No. 2017-011 as the Philippines pushed towards modernization. The program aims to improve the transportation system, but it also poses challenges to traditional jeepney drivers such as income instability and job loss. This study aims to understand the experiences and perceptions of jeepney drivers based in Manila regarding the PUVMP. It examines the drivers’ income level, access to financial resources, access to social services, job security, and coping strategies with the proposed plan. The researchers used a qualitative-descriptive approach to describe and analyze the jeepney drivers’ perceptions and coping strategies. The study highlights the drivers’ resilience through hardships, the need for practical solutions, better government support, and recognition of locally made jeepneys to ensure economic stability for drivers facing challenges from the PUVMP. The recommendations emphasize the importance of exploring the complexities of societal issues, especially for those involving the marginalized sector, and how dissecting these issues can help raise awareness and develop critical thinking skills.

Morphotectonic Analysis in the Sombe Lewara Sub-Watershed in the Region of Palu City and Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi Province

A study on the tectonic activity index (IAT) was conducted in the Sombe Lewara Sub-Watershed, encompassing the area of Palu City and Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. The objective of this research was to determine the level of tectonic activity in the Sombe Lewara Sub-Watershed. The analysis employed in this study was morphotectonic analysis, utilizing parameters such as Hypsometric Integral (HI), Basin Shape (BS), Asymmetry Factor (AF), Stream Length-gradient Index (SL), Area Factor (AF), and Valley floor width-to-height ratio (Vf ratio). The tectonic activity index (IAT) value in the Sombe Lewara Sub-Watershed was 1.6, which classifies it within the high tectonic activity category. This high level of tectonic activity in the research area influences the landscape conditions and the types of rocks present. The predominant rock types in the study area are sedimentary rocks such as conglomerate deposits, sandstone, siltstone, and claystone. These rocks form the character of an expansive alluvial fan landscape that nearly covers the entire plain. One of the primary factors contributing to liquefaction in the Balaroa Region is that the area is composed of sand sediment deposits and granite boulders that constitute the alluvial fan.

Unveiling Socioeconomic Disparities: Understanding Pregnancy Awareness and Family Well-being among Middle-Late Adolescent Mothers across Diverse Socioeconomic Strata in Urban Manila, Philippines

This research study examines the real-life experiences of adolescent mothers within the age group of 13-17 years old (middle adolescence) to 18-21 years old (late adolescence), coming from middle and low socioeconomic backgrounds. Using different qualitative research techniques, this study aims to uncover unique obstacles, coping strategies, and support networks encountered by teenage mothers from different economic strata. A total of 6 teenage mothers from middle-class (n=3) and low-income (n=3) settings is conducted to gather their stories and perspectives. Thematic analysis is employed to discern common threads and distinctions between the two groups, creating themes to categorize the similarities between their responses. The outcomes of this inquiry offer valuable insights into how socioeconomic status intersects with teenage parenthood, underscoring four significant factors that emerged through the data analysis: Support Systems, Educational and Career Trajectory, Family Dynamics and Expectations, and Awareness and Perception. Having identified these themes can design a path towards creating customized interventions and support mechanisms for both vulnerable demographics while advocating for more inclusive and educational programs in raising awareness and removing the stereotypes about teenage pregnancy. For future researchers interested in studying the real-life experiences of adolescent mothers from different economic backgrounds, it is essential to consider the myriad of factors that shape their lives. These factors include race, culture, and geographical location, all of which intersect with their socioeconomic status to influence their experiences.

Semiotic Functions of Indexicality

By exploring how indexical signals interact with other semiotic components, as well as how social context affects their interpretation, this study fills a research gap and examines the complex function that these signs play in influencing meaning-making within communication. The present study employed theme analysis to look at public speeches, social media posts, and ads that promoted environmental awareness and community involvement.  Themes about social action and environmental responsibility evolved, along with the identification of indexical signals.  A comparative examination showed that although basic themes were shared across societies, how particular indications were interpreted differed according to social and cultural situations.  Indexical signals interact with other semiotic components to create meaning, as demonstrated by semiotic analysis. This study underscores the significance of indexicality in communicating complex concepts and the necessity of employing culturally sensitive communication techniques.  These results might be useful in developing messages that effectively encourage global community involvement and environmental awareness.
