Use of Sustainable Energy Sources and Technologies in Primary and Secondary School Buildings in Greece. Can They Eliminate their Carbon Footprint?

School buildings consume energy covering their energy demand. The most of them utilize fossil fuels and grid electricity while the use of renewable energies is rather limited. School buildings should eliminate their carbon emissions in order to achieve the global target for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The energy consumption and the carbon emissions in schools have been evaluated. School buildings in Greece consume less than 100 kWh/m2 year. Solar thermal energy, solar photovoltaic energy and high efficiency heat pumps can cover all the energy demand in school buildings in Greece replacing the use of conventional energy sources. These energy technologies are reliable, mature and cost-effective. There are 7,756 primary and secondary school buildings in Greece consuming 1.67 TWh/year. The total cost of energy renovation eliminating their carbon emissions is estimated at 1,156,000 €/school or 8.96 billion € for the 7,756 schools in the country. For achieving the target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, 310 Greek schools should be energy refurbished every year eliminating their carbon footprint in the next 25 years. Taking into account the availability of benign energy sources and technologies the main barrier for eliminating the carbon emissions in school buildings in Greece by 2050 is the high investment cost. Our results could be useful for the development of the required policies for decarbonization in school buildings.

Self-Acceptance of Deaf Students in an inclusive environment at SLB Negeri 1 Padang

 This study aims to explore the self-acceptance of deaf students in an inclusive environment at SLB Negeri 1 Padang. Using a qualitative approach, the study involves in-depth interviews with students, teachers, and direct observation in the classroom to understand the factors that affect the self-acceptance of deaf students. The results showed that social support from teachers and peers, inclusive teaching methods, and active participation in extracurricular activities contributed significantly to student self-acceptance. However, deaf students still face challenges in communication and social interaction, which affects their confidence and the way they see themselves. This research provides important insights for educators and stakeholders in designing better educational strategies to support the self-acceptance of deaf students in an inclusive environment. Thus, the results of this study are expected to be a reference for a more inclusive and friendly education policy for all students.

The Causes and Effects of Truancy in Chinyama Litapi Schools of Zambezi District

Education is a touchstone and an essential requirement of human life.  The purpose of this study was to identify causes of truancy, establish effects of truancy and find out ways of improving attendance in schools in Chinyama Litapi area. The study employed a mixed paradigm and descriptive design that sampled seven schools and 80 participates. In order to meet these objectives, the researcher used open ended and closed questionnaires, interviews and observation. The findings revealed that there was high level of truancy among school going children in Chinyama Litapi area that result from personal, home and school factors. The study recommended that, there is need to have a detailed government educational policy on truancy reflecting why, when and how the offenders would be punished. Further it should explain who is to receive stiffer punishment whether the child, parent or the teacher to avoid unnecessary truancy that make many pupils drop school.
