Influence of Management Commitment in the Implementation of Hotel Environmental Management Practices and its Effect on Business Sustainability among Hotels in Tanzania

This study aimed to assess the influence of management commitment in the implementation of hotel environmental management practices and its effect on business sustainability among hotels in Tanzania. Studies have shown that management commitment plays a significant role in the implementation of hotel Environmental Management Practices (EMPs). Based on that argument, two hypotheses were formulated as follows; Firstly, Management commitment influences the implementation of environmental management practices. Secondly, Implementation of environment practices have effects on hotel business sustainability. The study was conducted in two cities namely: Arusha and Dar es Salaam whereby a structured questionnaire with Likert scale range from 1 to 5 was used to collect information from the sample of 400 managers and supervisors of hotels.   SPSS software was used for data entry and AMOS software version 23 was used to analyze multivariate analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. The findings indicated that both hypotheses were accepted that is, Management commitment has a positive influence on the implementation of the EMPs with highly significant at p<0.000. Also, the implementation of EMPs has a positive effect on hotel business sustainability strongly significant p<0.000. Therefore, the implications to industry managers and expertise are: first, hotel managers’ commitment plays a pivotal role in the EMPs implementation. Second, the implementation of EMPs in hotels serves as a vehicle in achieving hotel business sustainability. This contributes to a body of knowledge by showing that an environmental factor is a major external component that affects business sustainability in organizations like hotels. Moreover, the study has enlightened that, a hotel manager stands a strategic role in managing the organization based morals and values that address the interest of a bigger segment of its stakeholders. The study recommends future research on further study of water conservation especially on reducing water for showering and bathtubs. It was concluded that commitment of hotel managers in the implementation of EMP plays a pivot role in the sustainability of hotel business in Tanzania.

Risk Management Assessment at Primary Health Clinic to Support Quality Improvement

The rapid increase in population provides opportunities for businesses in the health sector to develop. Health workers began to look for profits and channel self-actualization by opening primary clinics. However, in running the primary clinic business, the owner faces obstacles in managing risk at the Primary Clinic because there are no guidelines for carrying out risk management at the clinic. Based on this premise, the research respondents were primary clinic owners in the city of Bandung. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire containing the type of clinic, clinic age, turnover per month, average number of patients per day, risk awareness, application of risk management, and statements related to risk management and quality of health services. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistical method, and hypothesis testing with multiple linear regression. This hypothesis test proves that risk management can support the improvement of the quality of health services with value of R square 75,9%. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a solution to increase awareness of the clinic owner about risk management by building a risk culture in the Primary Clinic entity. In addition, procedures for carrying out risk assessments are carried out starting from determining the context in the primary clinic, identifying non-medical risks, analyzing, evaluating, to determining mitigation activities. After that, strategic initiatives and monitoring plans are determined because risk management is a long-term and continuous process to support business processes and improve the quality of health services.

Mechanistic Basis of Arsenic Induced Carcinogenesis: Differential miRNA Expression

Arsenic, a toxic metalloid, provokes many detrimental consequences to human health. It is prevalent in earth’s crust and poses a major threat to humans globally. Inorganic arsenic exposure occurs mainly via drinking water or food and is metabolized in mammals to form organic metabolites/ end products. Chronic exposure to arsenic causes lung, skin and urinary bladder cancers and increases the risks of liver, kidney and prostate cancers. Arsenic-induced ROS generation, disturbances in several signaling pathways, DNA repair inhibition, chromosomal aberrations, and epigenetic changes including alterations in DNA methylation, histone modifications and differential miRNA expression profiles are involved in cancer progression, and malignant transformation. However, details of arsenic-induced carcinogenesis and molecular mechanisms involved are still remaining obscure. MicroRNAs are post-transcriptional gene expression regulators and themselves may act as oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Differential miRNA expression is implicated in several human cancers. This review covers general mechanistic basis of arsenic-induced carcinogenesis, explores recent in-vitro, in-vivo and cohort studies on differential miRNA expression profiles and shares associated molecular mechanistic data on miRNA dysregulation and their functional consequences leading to arsenic induced tumorigenesis, metastasis and cancer, also discusses the future directions.
